Throughout the summer, Bay State Running will be putting the spotlight on some of the top performances of the outdoor track and field season. While we’ve had our share of showstoppers over the past few months, these are the moments that stood out the most and left the biggest impression.

We’re not quite sure why Cohasset’s Nicholas Askjaer did not compete in any South Shore League, MSTCA or MIAA meets during the indoor season. Competing unattached, the talented junior still made his presence felt, finishing second in the shot put at New Balance Nationals Indoor in March with a personal-best 65 feet, 5 inches.
Back in action for all three championship seasons this spring, Askjaer made up for lost time … and then some.
The Cohasset standout captured individual titles in the shot put and discus at the Meet of Champions, won the New England shot title with an outdoor-best of 65-2 and then earned the biggest victory of his career in mid-June at New Balance Nationals.
Against some of the country’s finest shot-putters, it was Askjaer who stood alone at the top of the podium, capturing the national title with a toss of 64-1.
And it didn’t stop there.
Askjaer also earned All-American honors in the discus, placing fifth with a nearly 10-foot personal best of 196-6.
