Ten new state leaders, and a whole bunch of events where the winner wasn’t determined until the final few meters on the track or the last attempt in the throwing or jumping events.
It was about what we expected from our talented track & field athletes at Saturday’s Meet of Champions. Below, check out some great pics by photographer Byron Flagg during more than six hours of competition at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center

WHAT A COMPETITION: Andover’s Harvey Lys claimed the high jump title with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. It was a height that was matched by the top nine finishers!
YESSSSSS!: Brookline’s Cameron Walter captured a competitive 600m race with a near best of 1:21.13. Walter came back later to anchor his team to a victory in the 4x800m (8:02.6). Along with Walter, Kailas Ciatto, Vito Alpeza and Argi Protopapdakis comprised the foursome.
DOWN TO THE WIRE: Billerica’s Nyrah Joseph, far right, outlast Plymouth South’s Camryn Travis, center, and Franklin’s Sarah Dumas, left, in the 55m hurdles. Joseph was timed in a PR of 8.26. Travis (second, 8.28) and Dumas (third, 8.35) also clocked all-time bests in the race.
HEART OF A CHAMPION: North Reading’s Giuliana Ligor grits out a hard-earned win in the 600m where she posted a state-leading time of 1:34.88.
FOCUSED & READY: Brockton’s Lucas Andrade sees nothing but the finish line, one he would be the first to cross in the 55m hurdles with a PR of 7.44.
LEADING THE WAY: Nashoba’s Caroline Collins (7796) goes to business right away on the first lap of the two-mile run. While she would relinquish the lead during parts of the race, Collins made sure she was the last one in front at the end. She won with a time of 10:59.41.
