Memorable Moments: Historic Season For Abington’s 4x400m Relay

Throughout the next few weeks, Bay State Running will be putting the spotlight on some of the top performances of the outdoor track and field season. While we’ve had our share of showstoppers over the past few months, these are the moments that we feel stood out the most and left the biggest impression.

Massachusetts has long been known for producing outstanding 4×400-meter relays teams. As the final event of every championship meet, the 4x400m provides the perfect finishing touch to a day that’s often filled with remarkable performances by our state’s track & field athletes.

This past spring, it was the boys from Abington who consistently ended meets in style. The record-setting foursome of Naz Paulding, Lucas de Oliveira, and twins Nathan and Aiden Calcano Da Silva was nothing short of spectacular throughout the outdoor campaign.

Not to mention, very, very fast.

The Green Wave quartet rewrote the state record book twice this season. At the MIAA Meet of Champions, Abington blazed to a time of 3:16.03, shattering the previous state record of 3:18.04, set by Northampton in 2017. One week later, against the region’s best, the Green Wave lowered it again, clocking a meet-record 3:15.01 to capture the New England title.

The gifted squad capped its remarkable season at the New Balance Nationals, where it placed tenth against the nation’s elite with a time of 3:16.18.
