Cuthbertson, Levine Lead Bay Staters At Nike Indoor Nationals

It could be a big weekend in the Big Apple.

A small contingent of athletes from the Bay State are scheduled to compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City. The elite competition, held Thursday through Sunday at The Armory Track & Field Center, includes a few athletes capable of earning spots on the podium.

Leading the way is Lexington’s Ainsley Cuthbertson, the nation’s leader in the weight throw. Cuthbertson, who captured the inaugural event at the recent Meet of Champions, sits atop the rankings with a best of 57 feet, 10.5 inches. On Thursday, she’ll be matched up against several 50-foot throwers, including Washington’s Kim Beard of Kings School, who ranks No. 2 in the country at 57-6.

Hopedale’s Ari Levine should be competitive in the shot. The Blue Raiders senior is among the top six scheduled to square off inside the circle on Saturday with a best of 62-2¼. The event will feature three of the top shot-putters in the country right now — Texas’s CJ Williams of Momentum Throws (68-3¼), Indiana’s Hudson Sveadas of Signal Mountain (64-9¾) and Virginia’s Kobi Bonds of Auburn (64-4).

Oliver Ames’ Lavender Lozaka, who leaped a season best of 19-feet even to take runner-up honors in the long jump at the New England Championships less than two weeks ago, is listed among the top entries in her specialty on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, Worcester Tech’s Gershom Opoku will be looking to make an impact in the high jump where he was a best of 6-6 from the CMAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 8.
