Opening Weekend Of Statewide Track Action Begins With MSTCA Winter Festival

It’s that time.

The first two of several statewide competitions will be held this weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center with the annual MSTCA Winter Festival. The two-day meet will take place on Saturday and Sunday, and both days will mirror each other with a full slate of events. Either day will bring strong competition.

Here’s a sampling of some of the talent expected at Reggie this weekend. Click the links below for live results. A schedule of events is also included.

SATURDAY

The state already has one shot-putter over 50 feet this season, with Framingham’s Luke Stubbs launching a big-time PR of 51-6.5 at a Bay State Conference meet on Thursday. Stubbs is not listed among Saturday’s entries, but we have at least two others who could join the 50-foot club—one of whom could even push 60 feet.

Lunenburg’s Ray Beardmore, the top seed, owns a PR of 59-3. Could he crack the 60-foot milestone in his season opener? Chelmsford’s Jack Meyers enters as the No. 2 seed at 51-6.

Speaking of milestones, we may see one in the girls’ long jump. Lowell’s Esther Ofodile sits less than two inches away from the 19-foot barrier with a PR of 18-10.75.

Fresh off her All-American finish at the New Balance RunningLane Championships, Whitinsville Christian’s Abby Flagg will look to carry that momentum onto the indoor surface. The Crusader junior is the top entry in the mile with a 5:21 seed.

We could have a barn-burner in the boys’ 4x200m relay. Quincy enters with a blazing seed time of 1:30.0, followed by North Quincy at 1:31.07. Expect handoffs to be crucial in this one. The 4x400m could be just as exciting, with three teams closely clustered at 3:33—Lowell (3:33.13), Innovation Academy (3:33.53), and Westborough (3:33.85).

SUNDAY

Coming off a strong cross-country season that included a fourth-place finish in the Division 2 race at the Meet of Champions, Groton-Dunstable’s Andrew Kosiba will look to continue that success on the indoor oval. Kosiba is the No. 1 seed in the mile with a personal best of 4:29.97 from last spring. His closest challenger is Medford’s Adam Lewis, who enters with a seed time of 4:32.03. If the race does turn out close, Kosiba appears to have the edge. He’s a 50-second 400m runner.

A lean at the finish could determine the winner in the girls’ 55m dash. The top five runners in this field have seeds between 7.50 and 7.55. That quintet includes Wachusett Regional’s Terry Kwarteng (7.50), David Prouty’s Zoe Barnett (7.50), Chelsea’s Thania Simon (7.51), Seekonk’s Julianna Dutra (7.58) and Neighborhood House Charter’s RaAnah Crawford (7.55). Kwarteng and Barnett are both freshman.

Brockton could be looking to make a statement in the early-season meet in the 4x400m The state’s fourth-place finisher at last year’s Meet of Champions comes in with a top seed of 3:25.99.
