Just eight days after his historic win at the Foot Locker Nationals, Tamrat Gavenas will be back in race mode this weekend. The Phillips Academy senior is the top seed in the Invitational 2 Mile at the inaugural Beantown Winter Classic at The TRACK at New Balance. Gavenas is entered in the club/open race, scheduled for 10:37 a.m.. on Sunday of the two-day meet.
The Harvard-bound runner has an all-time best of 8:45.75 from his third-place finish at the New Balance Nationals last June. On the indoor surface, he clocked a PR of 8:14.94 from the BU John Thomas Terrier Classic in late January.
The 600m on Saturday features New England champion Ben Tavares of Weston, who raced to a PR of 1:21.58 to take the regional title last winter. Tavares was third in the 800m at the Meet of Champions in June where he had an all-time best of 1:55.12. Westfield’s Sean Johnson, a 1:24 runner and victor at last week’s Winter Festival Small School meet, is also in the seeded section.
In Saturday’s seeded section of the mile is Parker Charter teammates Dan Garrison and Henry Jacobsen, who were the 1-2 finishers at Winter Festival.
The high jump, slated for Sunday, features Brockton’s Lucas Andrade, who captured the Large School title at the Winter Festival last Sunday with a height of 6 feet, 4 inches. He has a best of 6-6.
Framingham’s Sasha Lamakina, who was one of 14 Bay Staters that broke three minutes for the 1,000m last year, is entered in that event on Sunday. The Flyers’ junior was second in the 600m at the MOC last year where she ran a PR of 1:35.43.
With a PR of 5:03.58, Westfield’s Megan Moran is among the top seeds in the mile on Saturday.
