Preseason Cross Country Rankings Girls #2: Billerica

#2 Billerica

You could have probably guessed who our top two teams would be. Billerica was second at the Meet of Champs last year and bring back their entire team. There isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said about Billerica and their rivals that we’ll be talking about soon. If you haven’t read Coach Miller’s article about them, he provides an excellent historical perspective on our top two teams.

Two questions standout with Billerica. 1. Have they done enough to usurp Lexington? 2. How far can they go? We were disappointed in the lack of coverage both Billerica and Lexington received outside Massachusetts last fall. Both teams should be contenders to qualify for nationals in November.

Let’s stick to Mass for now though. Last year Billerica was actually ahead of Lexington through three scorers. Then Lexington managed to put their four and five runners in the top twenty and seal the deal. The good news is that we think Billerica can match that.

Evelyn Wesling and Gianna McGowan were 29th and 35th last year. Not too shabby. However, McGowan was returning from injury last year. In 2024, she was the runner at the Meet of Champions. They were also missing Hartlie Seigel at the Meet of Champs as well. Seigel ran 19:00 at the Divisional race and ran 11:10 this past spring. There’s also an argument to be made that they were faster this spring. Billerica had eight girls run 11:36 or faster, and they’re all returning.

That’s a lot of numbers and a lot of speculating. What we do know is that Billerica is one of the strongest teams the Bay State has even seen, and because of that, 2026 is set up to be one of the most exciting seasons ever.
