Spotlight On Talent, Lucy Downin
As a ninth-grader last year, Downin enjoyed a sterling debut in cross country, a success she carried over when the competition switched from the trails to the track oval.
Look for the Holliston sophomore to make an even bigger impact this fall, and perhaps extend her season all the way through the Meet of Champions.
Downin kicked off her 2025 campaign by winning her first meet of the season in a dual meet against Westwood, and her success never wavered from there. She placed fifth in the Varsity B race at the Bay State Invitational in Wrentham, clocking an impressive 18:27.3 over the 5K course. Downin then lowered her personal best to 18:01.5 while capturing the Tri-Valley League Championship. She followed that performance a few weeks later with a victory at the MIAA Division 2B Championships and capped her season with a third-place finish in Div. 2 at the Meet of Champions.
Her cross-country résumé alone would make Downin a runner to watch this fall. But what she accomplished on the track as a freshman provides even more reason to believe she could shine on the up-and-down terrain.
During the indoor season, Downin won the Div. 4 mile with a personal-best 4:53.53, a time that ranked fourth nationally among ninth-graders. She also finished second in the 1,000-meter run at the Meet of Champions in 2:54.38 and was runner-up in the Freshman Mile at the New Balance Nationals with a time of 4:54.16.
Her outdoor season was just as impressive. Downin improved her mile best to 4:51.18 while finishing second in the freshman race at New Balance Nationals. She also attained gold at the Div. 4 Championship before placing fourth at the Meet of Champions. Downin also demonstrated her versatility and speed with PRs of 58.93 in the 400m and 2:14 in the 800m.
That’s a lot of stats and a lot of reasons to believe we could witness some special things from the Holliston standout this season.
