Strong Performances Abound At MSTCA Frank Kelley Invitational (Results & Photos)

Clear skies, no wind, and a moderately flat terrain—you guessed it!

Fast times were plentiful Saturday at the MSTCA Frank Kelley Invitational, the opener of a doubleheader that also featured the Bay State Invitational (Twilight Meet).

Hopedale’s Quinn Cook clocked the state’s No. 1 time of the season to capture the featured Open 5K at the Wrentham Developmental Center. The Blue Raiders sophomore raced to a nearly 30-second PR, crossing the line in 15 minutes, 28.1 seconds.

Much like he did in his runner-up finish at the Highland Park Invitational in early September, Cook dictated the pace from the start. He surrendered the lead to eventual second-place finisher Landon Zoss of Andover late in the race, but never let up. Cook regained the top spot with roughly 400 meters remaining and pulled away to secure the victory. Zoss held on for second in 15:44.8, while Lunenburg’s Matthew Pilon finished third in 15:53.

Cook’s time obliterated his previous best of 15:57.6, set at last year’s Twilight Invitational. The victory also made the Hopedale tenth-grader a perfect 3-for-3 at Wrentham, following wins in the freshman races at last year’s Kelley Invitational and the Frank Mooney Invitational.

The St. Mary’s duo of senior Kelsey Kwiatek and sophomore Mckenna O’Connell went 1-2 in the girls’ Open 5K. Both achieved PRs, with Kwiatek breaking the tape in 18:21.3 and O’Connell securing second in 18:32.8. The top five all broke 19 minutes, with Northampton’s Mairead O’Neil (third, 18:40.5), Bishop Fenwick’s Adelaide Sweatman (fourth, 18:44.5), and Lincoln-Sudbury’s Avery Gibson (fifth, 18:58.7) taking the next three spots.

The five-hour meet, which also included separate Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior/Senior 3K races in Small/Medium and Large School divisions, began with a dominant performance from Carver’s Hazel Butterworth. Butterworth was well ahead of the field in the Small/Medium Freshmen race, clocking 11:34.5. The talented frosh finished more than 250 meters ahead of Walpole’s Mackenzie Trotta, who was timed in 12:23.5 for second.

Norwell teammates Katherine Murray, Audrey Birtwell and Olivia Sowinski swept the top three spots in the Junior/Senior race. Murray, the two-time defending Div. 3A champion, won in 11:29.6. Birtwell finished second in 11:45.4, while Sowinski was third in 12:08.8.

In the boys’ Sophomore Large School race, Peabody’s Luke Murphy was the only runner to dip under 10 minutes, clocking 9:52.3. Plymouth South’s Xavier Joachim took the runner-up spot in 10:13.5.

Beverly’s Grace Corbett went sub-11 in the Junior/Senior Large School race, finishing in 10:59.7. Central Catholic’s Kyla Breslin was second in 11:18.7.
