While every race should generate its own level of excitement, Saturday’s Open 5K at the Frank Kelley Invitational has the potential to be the most intriguing of the day.
It will be held midway through the first meet of a doubleheader that also includes the Bay State Invitational Twilight Meet later Saturday, with the girls slated for 11 a.m. and the boys beginning at 11:30.
Based on performances over the past year, the top entry in the boys’ field is Andover’s Landon Zoss. The Golden Warriors senior, who has no recorded performance yet this season, was a second-place finisher at the MIAA Division 1A Championships, where he raced to a PR of 15:39.1 at Wrentham. Zoss has the credentials to be one of the top contenders, especially if the race is tight in the closing stages. The 4:19 miler also has sub-2:00 speed in the 800 and ran a best of 2:32 for the 1K.
Back in mid-September, Hopedale’s Quinn Cook proved he belongs in the conversation after his runner-up finish at the Highland Park Invitational. Cook’s time of 16:09.6 was nearly a minute faster than his previous best of 17:06.5 at the same course in 2025. The Blue Raiders sophomore, a bronze medalist at last year’s Div. 3C meet, will likely be in the lead pack, perhaps sharing pace-setting duties as he did at Highland Park. Cook was first introduced to Wrentham in the second race of his ninth-grade campaign last year, winning the Freshmen 3K in 9:26.4. Could he make it two straight wins at the Kelley Invite?
Groton Dunstable teammates Andrew Kosiba and Greyson Duane have already demonstrated they can break 16 minutes at Wrentham. Kosiba ran 15:59.3 at the Kelley Invite two years ago as a sophomore, while Duane clocked 15:48 to finish fifth in that same 2024 race. This will be the first all-out effort of the season for the two runners, who have gone 1-2 in their first two league meets, running 17:53 and 17:48, respectively. Kosiba was second in Div. 2B last year and fourth at the Meet of Champions, while Duane was seventh at the divisional states and 11th at the MOC.
Wellesley will be fully loaded, with seven runners entered who have times ranging from 16:04 to 17:27. Senior Daniel Goldberg leads the charge after running his current PR of 16:04.4 at last year’s Bay State Invitational. So far this fall, he has a 16:13.0 best from a season-opening league meet with Newton North.
Also in the field are Lunenburg’s Matthew Pilon and Wachusett Regional’s Brady Bartley, both of whom broke 16 minutes with their 1-2 finish at last fall’s Mid-Wach League Championships.
The girls’ race features at least seven runners who have broken 20 minutes for the 5K.
Headlining Saturday’s competition are Northampton’s Mairead O’Neal and Wakefield Memorial’s Quin Wilcox.
O’Neal was second at the Div. 2B Championships and fourth overall at the Meet of Champions. She was fourth in the ‘B’ Race at last year’s Bay State Invitational and ran a PR of 17:59.1 at the Twilight Invitational. She is already off to a strong start, winning a league meet against Minnechaug Regional with a solid 19:19.2 clocking.
Wilcox was consistently in the mid-19-minute range last year and ran a Wrentham best of 18:25.5, an effort that placed her third overall at the Frank Mooney Invitational. She was third at the Div. 2B meet and sixth at the Meet of Champions.
You can count on Westborough’s Clare Hall being with the leaders. She was the Division A winner at the Midland-Wachusett League Championships and ran 18:37.8 at Wrentham to place third in the Division IC meet.
Don’t forget about Saint Mary’s Kelsey Kwiatek. She ran a PR of 18:24.4 to place second at last year’s Bay State Invitational. She was seventh at both the Division 2C Championships and the Meet of Champions.
