Bay State Invitational: Boys’ Preview

Nearly 1,300 runners are expected to be at Fort Devens this Saturday for the MSTCA Bay State Invitational. With several key runners opting out of this weekend’s meet, it’s difficult to predict the top schools that will be fighting for the team plaque. But who are the harriers that we believe might be challenging the pack up front.

Here’s our list.

BOYS’ A RACE

Paulino Guevara Mateo, Cambridge Rindge & Latin

CB&L will have several of its varsity sitting out on this one, but Mateo is scheduled to competein the first varsity race of the day.. The talented junior was second in the Championship race at last weekend’s Frank Kelley Invitational with a PR of 15:41.6, a meet won by the Falcons.

Moreau is coming off a victory in the Championship race at the Kelley Invite, clocking a best of 15:27.7. The last time that the senior competed on the Fort Devens course was at the Meet of Champions where he was fifth in 16:08.7. No doubt he’ll be focusing on improving that time on Saturday with possible victory.

Jack Courtney, Lowell

Courtney was fourth in this Varsity C race last year at this meet with a time of 16:43.7. He was 18th at the Manchester (NH) Invitational this past weekend where he traversed a very difficult 5K course at Derryfield Park in 16:18.3
