After finishing fifth in the Discus on Thursday, Cohasset Junior Nicholas Askjaer returned to win the Shot Put, making it three National Champions for the Bay State. Askjaer, now a 3-time All-American, threw 64’1 to earn himself the crown. The best part? He wasn’t alone. Oliver Ames’ Mitchell Callender had his best throw of the season, 62’8.5″, to finish runner up to his familiar rival.
Throughout the day’s competition, there must have been a sense of deja vu, as the duo have finished 1-2 at three meets this season: Weston Twilight, Meet of Champions, and New Englands. The familiarity may have bolstered them as well, as both throwers saved their best throws for last. Askjaer’s winning throw was his sixth of the competition, and Callender’s PR was his sixth as well.
The success Massachusetts athletes have shown this weekend is unparalleled. Three National Champions; Multiple second place finishes. However, this might be the highlight of the weekend, as both athletes are Juniors. The outdoor record of 67’10.75 is daunting, but with these two competing against each other, we’re in store for something special next season.
