Runners To Watch: Whitinsville Christian’s Emily Flagg

While she’s enjoyed success on the track, there’s no doubt that Emily Flagg’s forte is cross country. Over the past two years, the Whitinsville Christian junior has established herself as one of the state’s best on the trails, particularly in Division 2.

Last fall, Flagg defended her crown at the Division 2C Championships and then struck gold at the Meet of Champions, winning individual honors by more than 20 seconds over Holliston’s Maggie Kuchman. The Crusader standout was unbeaten against Massachusetts rivals, often winning races by 30 seconds or more. Along the way, she captured titles at the Vineyard XC Invitational, the Ocean State Invitational, and the Dual Valley Conference Championships. Her season highlight came at the Frank Mooney Invitational, where she blazed a state-leading 17:21.9, one of four times she dipped under 18 minutes.

We expect more of the same from Flagg this fall. A three-peat at the Meet of Champions is well within reach, and she could make her first postseason push at the Nike Cross Regionals in New York. With a top-five finish there, the road to Nationals in Portland, Ore., would be wide open.
