Beginning late last month and continuing to Sunday, it’s been all about league championships. Based on results on athletic.net, several new state leaders were produced in the meets that have taken place so far.
At the Midland Wachusett Indoor Championship on Feb. 2. Shrewsbury’s Derek Shimer soared to a state No. 1 of 6 feet, 10 inches in the boys’ high jump. Shimer’s effort was an all-time best by three inches! His previous best was 6-7 from his second-place finish at the New England Outdoor Championships in June.
Norton’s Zoe Santos, who has been unbeaten all season in the girls’ high jump, improved on her state-leader with a season best of 5-6.5 from the TVL Championships/Showcase meet. She improved on her SB by a half an inch. She cleared 5-6 at last month’s MSTCA Division 4 State Relays.
Plymouth North’s Macey Shriner clocked the state’s third fastest all-time performance in 600-meter run at the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Championships on Jan. 30. She blazed the three-lapper in a PR of 1:31.75 to win the race by more than 10 seconds! Shriner moved ahead of Framingham’s Sasha Lamakina (1:33.98) for the top spot in the rankings.
We had six sprinters break 35 seconds for the 300m at their respective conference meets with Winchester’s Daniel Killian (34.37 seconds) and Reading’s Ryan Pulpi (34.38) occupying the top two positions in the rankings with their 1-2 finish at the ML-12 Varsity Championships on Monday.
In the 55m dash, Waltham’s Sunil Peters took over No. 1 in the rankings after winning the short sprint in 6.41 at the DCL Foley Division Championships last Friday.
Mixed in with a few league championships this weekend is the MSTCA Last Chance Qualifier. Just like the name says, the meet is the final qualifier for the upcoming MIAA Divisional Championships. Saturday’s competition, which starts at 10 a.m., at Reggie Lewis, also provides an opportunity for qualified athletes to improve on their seedings for their championship meets.
