By The Numbers: Predictions For MSTCA Division 3 State Relays

We looked at past performances this season. We put our trust in you, the coaches, in the times you submitted for a few of your entries. We looked at the numbers…and then we added it all up.

From that, here’s our most educated guess on what will happen at the Division 3 State Relays at Reggie Lewis on Saturday. As we know, and as we often say, anything can happen when our track & field athletes take on their rivals in a championship meet. But if you’re a stat person which, admit it, most of us are, here are the top squads for this weekend’s competition from the numbers that have been given to us.

Beginning with the girls, this has the potential to be a close onewith several teams capable of earning the hardware. Judging by the seeds, Amherst-Pelham, Westwood, Marblehead, and Billerica are all in the 27-30 point range. In all, 26 teams are capable of scoring in this meet. Westwood has the No. 1 seed in the shuttle hurdle, 4×800-meter and distant medley relays. Amherst-Pelham ranks No. 1 in the sprint medley, and 4x400m relays and is No. 2 in the 4x200m. Marblehead has top teams in the 4x200m and long jump relays and Billerica is the best in the shot and No. 2 in the 4x50m.

With the possibility of winning at least four events, Billerica is the favorite for boys with close to 50 points. The Indians are ranked No. 1 in the 4x800m, SMR, high jump, and long jump. Close behind Billerica is Melrose, which could score in eight of the 10 events, based on the stats. The Red Hawks have the top team in the high jump and are No. 2 in the long jump. Walpole and Milton are the next two squads with the capability of scoring around 30 points, if you go by the seeds.
