More than 300 high schools compete in cross country in Massachusetts. About a third of them will be at the Wrentham Development Center this weekend for the annual Frank Kelley Invitational.
Saturday’s meet features separate boys’ and girls’ Small and Large School freshmen and sophomore 3K races, junior and senior 5K races and a Championship 5K. The competition begins at 9 a.m. with the Small School events. The Large School races are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
The Championship races will feature several top returnees from last year. In the girls’ race at 12 p.m., the No. 1 entry is Cambridge Rindge & Latin’s Aoife Sholvin. The CB&L senior was third at last year’s event with a time of 19 minutes, 34.10 seconds. Sholvin would go on to win the Div. 1A crown and her second straight Div. 1 title at the Meet of Champions (MOC) as well as secure a spot at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego with a tenth-place finish at the FL Northeast Regionals. West Bridgewater’s Ella Dunbury is also entered in this weekend’s race. She was sixth in 2023 and later in the season earned a pair of bronze medals at the Div. 3C meet and MOC. Other top runners listed among the entries are Canton’s Lauren Raffetto, Oxford’s Cameron Davis, Marshfield’s Eleanor Angeles-Whifield, Weymouth’s Gracie Richard and Wachusett Regional’s Naomi Witt.
For the boys’ race at 12:30 p.m., top returners from last year are Cambridge Ridge & Latin’s Gael Medina (seventh, 16:05.5), Ludlow’s Joseph Keroak (tenth, 16:11.1) and Cambridge Ridge & Latin’s Daniel Bronstein (19th, 16:19.2). Div. 3C champion Henry Jacobsen of Parker Charter is also in the field. Ludlow’s Logan Walsh, Groton Dunstable’s Greyson Duane, Plymouth South’s Noah Brilliant and Falmouth’s Silas Gartner are other harriers we expect will be battling up front this weekend.
