Scene (& More) From The 13th Annual Adrian Martinez Classic

The Adrian Martinez Classic was back in action Saturday night after a brief four-year hiatus. The 13th annual event, sponsored by Marathon Sports and OOFOS, once again did not disappoint with a large gathering of spectators treated to a mixture of fun and competitive races at Emerson Field in Concord, Mass. From the Community Races, which included the Mixed 4x400m Family Relay, to the High Performance (HP) Races, where elite fields of mostly collegians and professional runners answered the gun, the Martinez Classic was a grand success. Not even the heavy rainfall near the conclusion of the meet would deter performances as the seeded sections of the HP Women’s 800m proved with Emily Mackay of New Balance Boston nearly going sub-2 with a winning time of 2:00.11. John Reniewicki of UA Mission Run Baltimore Distance broke the lone meet record, and it was a good one. Competing in the HP Men’s 5,000m, the former Arizona State University standout chopped more than 10 seconds from the existing mark with a winning time of 13:20.31.

In preparation for the Brooks PR Invitational on Wednesday where she’s entered in the two mile, Belmont’s Ellie Shea of Emerging Elite looked strong in placing third overall in the seeded section of the HP Women’s 1,500m with a time of 4:14.24. Acton-Boxbrough’s star alum and recent Yale grad Samantha Friborg was the Section B winner in the HP Women’s 800m with a time of 2:05.15. Finishing third in that race was Amy Piccolo of the Battle Road Track Club. The onetime Ursuline Academy all-stater was timed in 2:10.24. Friborg came back and acted as a rabbit for the elite race.

Brian Gamble of the Brimmer & May School and Emerging Elite, a fourth-place finisher at the BSR Scholastic Mile back in early May, was triumphant in the Men’s Open Mile. Gamble led five under 4:20 with a time of 4:12.35. In Section B of the Men’s HP 800m, Northbridge’s Marcus Reilly proved he’s ready for the upcoming New Balance Nationals with a near best of 1:50.72, good for sixth overall.
