New Balance Nationals, Day 2: Calcano Da Silva Blazes to Bronze

Day 2 Highlights

Aidan Calcano Da Silva just showed he belongs amongst the nation’s best. The Abington Junior has been on a tear as of late over both hurdles and the flat 400. That culminated in a season best 51.96 to finish third overall at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. That’s one of the best times in Massachusetts history and inches closer to Ryan Kyles record set just last year. Aidan is not done yet, as he and his teammates, including twin Nathan, will look to lower their state record 4x400m mark.

Varela Just Misses All-American

While she just missed the podium by finishing eighth overall, Solana Varela concluded an incredible season. Up to this point, the Weston senior was undefeated over the 400m Hurdles, including the 300m distance she ran at New Englands. At Franklin field today she raced to 1:00.68, one of her best times on the season.

Boakye-Yiadom Takes Flight in Philly

Westford Academy’s Kaitlin Boakye-Yiadom has broken the 20 foot barrier. She did so in style by winning the freshmen long jump at New Balance Nationals. Entering the meet she had a best of 19’10.5″. On Friday she launched a personal best of 20’2.5″. It was a banner day as she jumped over 19 feet five times.

McCormack Proves He’s More Than A Jumper

Wayland’s Ryan McCormack wrapped up competition on Friday in the decathlon and earned a spot on the podium by placing fifth overall and earning All-American. The state champion in the pole vault used his jumping prowess to put himself in great position after Day 1. However, it was his 400m performance that turned heads. McCormack ended Day 1 with a 49.48, the second fastest time in the field. That was just a preview, because on Day 2 he ran the fastest 1,500m with a 4:46.81 to secure his place on the podium. Saint John’s Prep Tyson Stroope finished 10th overall.

We’ll continue to update with results throughout the day
