As it so often does, this past weekend’s divisional state championships did not disappoint. They delivered everything we expected — and maybe a little more. The scenery may change and the competition may shift slightly, but expect the same intensity and excitement when Massachusetts’ top athletes converge at Willard Park for Saturday’s MIAA Meet of Champions.
The best of the best from all three divisions (Divisions 1, 2, and 3) will face off this weekend, competing in six races — boys and girls — on a fair yet often challenging five-kilometer course at Fort Devens. Saturday’s meet will mark the end of the cross-country season for most of our harriers. A select few teams and individuals will continue on with hopes of postseason success at regional and national meets, such as the New Balance RunningLane XC Championships, Nike Cross Nationals, and the Brooks XC Championships.
But for most, this weekend represents their last hurrah. For the seniors, their final chance to showcase their talent on the biggest of stages. Get ready, there’s no doubt it’s going to be a good one this weekend!
Leading up to the big day, Bay State Running will preview all three divisions that will make Fort Devens their home on Saturday. Who will be the top runners and teams to watch this weekend? We’ll give it our best shot at predicting the outcomes. But remember — as we’ve seen so many times over the years — anything can happen, and it often does.
