Runner’s to Watch: Brookline’s Liam Hartmann

As a sophomore last season Liam Hartman was 16th at the Meet of Champions and helped Brookline secure its third straight Division 1 Crown. His time of 16:18 is the fifth fastest time from all returning runners this season.

It’s hard to imagine, but heading into his junior year, he has the potential to make a big leap this season. He comes into this year with a 15:38 5K PR from the Bay State Conference Meet at Wrentham. Based off his success this outdoor season, where he ran 9:12 for the Two Mile at the Division 1 Championships, he should be able to lower that 5K time and chase a low 15 Minute clocking.

Last season he had success on more challenging terrain, running well at both Northfield Mountain and Fort Devens. At the 2024 Meet of Champions, you had to run sub 15:50 at Fort Devens to finish in the top six. Hartman should be capable of that which bodes well for #5 Brookline. He’ll be aided by teammate Theodore Butty, who emerged as one of the fastest distance runners in the state this spring, winning the Division One race in 9:05. Together they have the potential to form the strongest 1-2 combo in the state. Given Brookline’s run of success, there’s a good chance we’ll see them at the Nike NXR Regionals, giving Hartman the chance to test himself against the region’s best.

Hartman and the Warriors will be tested week one against #2 Natick. A battle between Hartman, Butty, and Natick’s John Bianchi could be a preview of the Meet of Champions.
