We looked at past performances this season. We put our trust in you, the coaches, in the times you submitted for a few of your entries. We looked at the numbers…and then we added it all up.
From that, here’s our most educated guess on what will happen at the Division 1 State Relays at Reggie Lewis on Friday night. As we know, and as we often say, anything can happen when our track & field athletes take on their rivals in a championship meet. But if you’re a stat person which, admit it, most of us are, here are the top squads for this weekend’s competition from the numbers that have been given to us.
In the boys’ meet, St. John’s Prep appears to be the overwhelming favorite. From our math, the Eagles should score about 50-51 points. That’s about 15 points more than three other squads we expect will be fighting for the next few spots. In no particular order, that’s Newton North, Lexington and Westford Academy. St. John’s Prep has the ability to score in eight of the 10 events with projected victories in the long jump and shot relays, a potential runner-up finish (or victory) in the shuttle hurdle relay and a combined 10 points in the 4×200-meter relay with two of its teams scoring.
How about the girls? It looks like Newton North all the way. The Tigers have a chance to score 60 or more points this Friday. That’s a good 20-plus points ahead of our next closest squads, which are Weymouth, Lexington and Central Catholic. The Tigers have the top seed in the 4x50m, shuttle hurdle and long jump relays and are ranked No. 2 in the sprint medley and high jump relays. Like St. John’s Prep, they should score in eight of the 10 events.
