Two of the final competitions of the indoor track & field season matched our top athletes against the nation’s best with the New Balance Nationals and Nike Indoor Nationals held this past weekend. During the four days of competition, we witnessed a bunch of PRs, a few school records, a handful of All Americans and even a state record.
For this week’s HOKA Athletes of the Week, we’d like to recognize two worthy athletes. Congratulations to Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron and Franklin’s Sarah Dumas, our respective boys’ and girls’ recipients.
The Stanford-bound Bergeron averaged a crisp 4:35 mile pace to finish second in the 5,000-meter run at the New Balance Nationals where he cruised to a new state record of 14 minutes, 14.57 seconds. That time broke his own state mark of 14:17.78 from last month’s Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
Dumas, a University of Pennsylvania signee, earned All American for the third time in the pentathlon at New Balance. She was third overall with a PR of 3,313 points. Her effort follows a second-place finish at the outdoor nationals and a fourth-place showing at NBN last March.
