It was a busy and successful weekend for our track & field athletes, who competed amongst the best in the country at the Nike Indoor Nationals (NIN) and the New Balance Nationals (NBN). Nearly all our Bay Staters remained close to home at the TRACK at new balance for the NBN. For this week’s Athlete of the Week, it was a toss-up between two worthy athletes. So instead of just picking one, we decided to name them both are our recipient for this week’s honor – Catholic Memorial’s CJ Sullivan and Newton North’s Sprint Medley Relay.

Sullivan, one of our state’s best distance runners, manufactured the best performance of his high school career in the 5,000-meter run at New Balance this past weekend, an effort that also produced a new state record. The gifted senior just missed out on making the podium, placing seventh overall with an all-time best of 14:31.30. Two days earlier, Sullivan PR’d in the two mile where he ran 9:14.18.

As for Newton North, the foursome of Myles Scott, Brendan O’Guin, Quincy Scott and Tyler Tubman earned All American status by placing third overall in the Sprint Medley Relay. The Tigers finished with a school record of 3:30.80, one of our state’s best ever for the relay. Myles Scott and O’Guin combined for a time of 46.79 with their respective 200m legs, Quincy Scott ran 49.38 for the 400m and Tyler Tubman anchored with a 1:54.65 for the 800m. Through a little research, we believe their time is the third fastest in the history of the event with Mansfield holding the MA record of 3:28.99 from 2011 and Wachusett at No. 2 with a time of 3:29.90.
