Standout Performances Take Center Stage At MSTCA Shore and Metro Meets

National-level performances and several new state leaders highlighted this weekend’s MSTCA Shore Coaches Invitational and MSTCA Metro Coaches Invitational meets.

At the Shore Invitational in Braintree, Aiden Calcano Da Silva came within a second of breaking the year-old state record in the 400-meter hurdles. The Abington senior, who placed seventh at last year’s Meet of Champions, dominated the field with a nation No. 5 time of 52.37 seconds. The performance was just 0.65 off the state mark of 51.72, set last year by former Westford Academy standout Ryan Kyle.

Calcano Da Silva also teamed with Nathan Calcano Da Silva, Nazie Paulding, and Lucas de Oliveira on Abington’s winning 4x400m relay, which clocked an impressive 3:21.80 – nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up squad.

Amar Skeete moved to No. 11 nationally in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 50 feet, 4 inches. The Catholic Memorial standout also nearly reached 24 feet in the long jump, winning that event at 23-10.

Less than 24 hours after her breakthrough 4:50.34 mile at the BSR Elite Scholastic Meet, Canton’s Lauren Raffetto came just shy of the meet record in the 800m. Raffetto won by more than three seconds with a personal-best 2:13.05. The meet record of 2:12.29 was set in 1999 by Maura McCusker.

Mitchell Callender was a double winner for Oliver Ames, capturing the shot put with a throw of 62-7.25 and the discus at 171-10.

The Minutemen’s Lavender Kozaka continued her strong season in the long jump with a winning leap of 19-6.25. It marked her third jump beyond 19 feet this spring. Kozaka owns a season best of 20-0.75 from the Warrior Invitational on April 23.

At the Metro Invitational in Lexington, Newton North’s Blake MacNeal established a new state leader in the triple jump with a nearly two-foot personal best of 39-3.5.

Khadijah Diagne sprinted to victories in both the 200m and 400m. The Malden freshman clocked 24.71 in the 200m, ahead of Norah Berson, who was second in 25.61 after winning the 100 meters in 12.44. Diagne later returned to win the 400 in 56.36, with Ololara Baptiste of Amherst-Pelham close behind at 56.67.

Coming off a season-best 54.71 in the 400 at the BSR Elite Scholastic Meet on Friday night, Natick’s Chloe Elder earned another victory in the 800m, running a PR of 2:14.13.

Natick teammate and All-American Emmanuella Edozien captured the 100m hurdles in 14.32.

Lexington’s Ainsley Cuthbertson, currently ranked No. 5 nationally in the hammer throw, won her specialty with a toss of 175-4. Her season-best and state-leading mark of 176-6 came earlier this spring at the Mass Hammer Invite.

In the long jump, Kaitlyn Boakye claimed victory with a leap of 19 feet even.
