NBNI Preview: Saturday’s Must Watch Events

60m Hurdles

This will be Natick’s Emmanuella Edoziens swan song as a high school indoor track athlete. She’s already engraved her name in Massachusetts history. It’s now time to see what she can do against the nation’s best. Saturday’s prelims will be step one in her quest to earn all-american. The Semi-Finals are later that day with final on Sunday.

The Boy’s race features Meet of Champions winner and state #1 Harry Millar of Hopkinton. He’s only gotten better as the season’s progressed. Can he find another gear on the biggest stage? Lexington’s Simon Tandeih will be doubling back after earning all-American honors in the Pentathlon on Friday (more on that later!).

60m

It’s a similar story in the 60m Championship as another Massachusetts record holder and all-time great will run her final indoor race as a high school athlete. Sharon’s Nina Kyei-Aboagye will look to get through the prelims and earn a spot on the final on Sunday. Like the hurdles, there will be a simi-final in the morning first. As one of the fastest athletes in the country over 55m, she will be one of the top contenders.

Methuen’s Lauren Quarm will be racing as well. Hopefully she is back 100% after pulling up at the Meet of Champions. Quarm has consistently been one of the state’s best for most of her career. This would be a great opportunity the end things on a high note.

200m

A surprising false start deprived us potentially the best race of the day at the Meet of Champions. (It was still epic) While that race won’t materialize, we will get to see Nina Kyei-Aboagye, Natick’s Chloe Elder, and Malden’s Khadijah Diagne run the 200m. Only eight make the final, so it’s hard to imagine all three getting through and facing off. That being said, Diagne and Kyei-Aboagye rank in the top 25 nationally and Elder isn’t far behind, with Diagne holding the best mark at 38.25. We could also see the state 200m record of 24.57 go down as well.

800m

1000m Champion Harry Flint will take on an elite field on Saturday. His outdoor best is 1:53.10 and he’s run in that range as part of Brookline’s 4x800m all season. He’ll be in the third to last heat so he’ll have a great opportunity to run an overall best.

After just missing all-American in the 4x800m, Lexington’s Amelia Whorton will be back for the open 800m. Like Flint, she’ll be in one of the later heats so she’ll have fast company. She owns a personal best of 2:10.16 and has run 2:54.10 this season for the 1000m. A new personal best could be incoming.

4xMile

We love a good 4xMile here and the Bay State will be represented well on Saturday. The North Andover boys will be running in the seeded heat after a strong performance in the 4x800m, running a PR of 7:57.81. Watch out for Concord Carlisle in the first heat as well. They have one of the deepest squads we’ve seen in a while.

All eyes on will be on Lexington in the girl’s race. With a seventh-place finish in the 4x800m still fresh in their minds, they’ll be running with added motivation. Billerica, Braintree, and Whitinsville Christian will be bringing strong teams as well.

Triple Jump

Saturday Amar Skeete will be in what is “arguably” his best event. He decided to forgo the long jump on Friday to focus on the triple. As an all-American from outdoors last year, he enters as one of the top contenders. He’s cleared 50 feet outdoors. Now it’s time for indoors as well.

Weight Throw

Lexington’s Ainsley Cuthbertson has already earned all-American in the Weight Throw. She finished third at Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City with a throw of 56’8.75. Time to relax, right? Well, she’s entered in tomorrow’s competition as well because two-time all-American has a better ring to it. An incredible way to cap off an amazing season.
