
The smallest division produced some big-time results at Monday’s MIAA Division 5 Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center.
For the boys, Weston coasted an a 75-27 decision over second-place Dennis Yarmouth. On the girls’ side, an 11-point margin was the difference between the top three teams with North Reading collecting the hardware for its third straight win. The Hornet collected 53.25 points. Lunenburg took runner-up honors with 44 points, two points ahead of third-place Weston.
Giuliana Ligor collected more than half of North Reading’s points in its victory. The gifted senior moved to No. 3 in the state rankings in the 600-meter run, winning that title by three seconds with a PR and meet record of 1 minute, 33.82 seconds. Ligor also dominated the 55m hurdles, breaking the tape in another MR of 8.29, nearly a half a second ahead of her closest rival. She added eight more points to her day’s work by placing second in the 300m (40.43).
North Reading also has a win from high-jumper Callie MacLellan, who cleared 5 feet, 2 inches.
Dennis Yarmouth’s speedy senior Breanna Braham captured the 55m (7.18) and the 300m (39.54). Braham is currently No. 1 in the 300m with a best 39.26. Her effort in the short dash was only a hundredth of a second from her all-time best.
Weston benefitted from four victories and a second-place finish in the boys’ competition. Ben Tavares made a sub 1:20 effort at the Meet of Championship this Saturday seem possible. The Wildcat senior earned gold by clocking a state-leading 1:20.59. Ayer Shirley’s Cole New was second at 1:22.15. Tavares also ran a leg on the triumphant 4x200m relay (1:32.65), a squad that also consisted of Nicolas Barbieri, Jacob Kasanov and Noah Lago. Lago was a winner in the 55m dash (6.55), while Barbieri was second in the 300m (35.63) Away from the oval, Oscar Torres leaped a distance of 21-feet even to take the long jump.
In a possible showdown with state- and nation-leader Alex Jackson of Peabody at the Meet of Champions, Hopedale’s Ari Levine kept his unbeaten streak alive in the shot with a winning heave of 56-3.75. Norwell’s Noah Mulligan topped the field in the 300m with a best of 35.19. Para-athlete Delmace Joseph Mayo clocked a fast 2:33.92 in the 1,000m and 4:16.19 for the mile.
