Depth almost always rules out when it comes to the championship meets, particularly competitions like the MSTCA State Relays.
That couldn’t have been closer to the truth at Sunday’s Division 4 Relays. The Holliston girls and Wakefield boys each scored in nine of the 10 events and left Reggie Lewis as recipients of the team hardware.
Holliston claimed its second straight crown, defeating second-place Newburyport, 68-58, Pembroke was third with 56.5 points. The Panthers placed first in three events with victories in the sprint medley (4 minutes, 17.68 seconds), distance medley (12:59.0) and long jump (14.83 meters) as well as runner-up finishes in the shuttle hurdle (32.31), 4x400m (4:23.11) and 4x800m (10:09.02) relays.
Wakefield scored 47 points to survive a narrow three-point win over Pembroke in the boys’ meet. Medfield placed third with 33 points. The Warriors’ lone victory came in the 4x400m relay (3:30.12). Among other top performances, Wakefield was also second in the SMR (3:42.81) and third in the long jump (17.51m) relays.
Two records were broken in the meet. Old Rochester set a new mark in the SHR with the quartet of Wesner Archelus, Luke Devoe, Malik Washburn and Calder Eaton combining for a time of 26.57. In the 4x200m, Pembroke won by nearly three seconds with a record 1:30.92, a time that currently ranks No. 4 in the state.
