By The Numbers: Predictions For Division 4 State Relays

We looked at past performances this season. We put our trust in you, the coaches, in the times you submitted for a few of your entries. We looked at the numbers…and then we added it all up.

From that, here’s our most educated guess on what will happen at the Division 4 State Relays at Reggie Lewis on Sunday. As we know, and as we often say, anything can happen when our track & field athletes take on their rivals in a championship meet. But if you’re a stat person which, admit it, most of us are, here are the top squads for this weekend’s competition from the numbers that have been given to us.

It appears it will be all about Newburyport in the girls’ meet. The Clippers could score in excess of 80 points. From the seeds, they should scored in all 10 events. Newburyport has the top-ranked relays in the 4×400-meter, shuttle hurdle and 4x400m relays and the No. 2 squads in the sprint medley, 4x50m and 4×800. The Clippers are 1-2 in the 4x50m and 1-3 in the 4x400m. Like its counterpart, Holliston has plenty of depth and is ranked No. 2 overall behind the Clippers. The Panthers are ranked No. 1 in the SMR and DMR and also have the No. 2 spot in fourth other events. By the numbers, they’re about 14-15 points behind Newburyport.

Pembroke seems to have the upper hand in the boys’ meet and should score 40-plus points based on the seeds. The Titans have the top-ranked relays in the 4x50m and 4x200m, and the ability to score in six events. Norton, Old Rochester and Wakefield appear to be too close to call for the other three spots. Norton has the top seed in the SMR and 4x400m and Old Rochester ranks No. 1 in the SHR and high jump. Wakefield is ranked No. 2 in two events and could score five or more points in at least five events.
