The disappointment was obvious as he stood on the podium.
On the final day of the New Balance Nationals, Bishop Stang’s Jacob Cookinham, the No. 1 shot-putter in the country, was hoping to conclude an incredible winter season inside the circle. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for the Spartans’ senior, who settled for the bronze on Sunday with a toss of 63 feet, 6.75 inches. Hayden Dixon of Schuyler County (MO) won the event with a distance of 64-2.5. Finishing second was Luke Himes of Heritage Christian (IN) at 63-9.5.
Cookinham indicated a few things effected his performance, which was nearly four feet less than his personal best of 67-4.5.
“It was a tough day technically,” he said. “The body didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel in the best condition. It just wasn’t my day. I did the best I could. I am grateful to have this opportunity to compete against some great people. It just didn’t go my way.”
Cookinham held the the lead after the prelims with a toss of 62-7.75 on his second attempt, but could sense things were a little off.
“i was sick this morning and feeling really under the weather,” he said. “I was happy I could compete today. It’s all right. It’s motivation for outdoors and that’s all I can say.”

Championship Events
- Belmont’s Ellie Shea concluded an incredible weekend at NBN by finishing third in the mile with a near best of 4:40.76. The race was won by tenth-grader Sadie Engelhardt of Ventura (CA), who eclipsed Shea’s national sophomore mark with a winning time of 4:38.66. Tatum David of Olney (IL) was second at 4:38.80. Shea clocked a final 400m split of 1:08.03. A day after finishing third in the 800m, Newton South’s Amelia Everett clocked a solid 4:56.42 to place 35th among the 99 competitors.
Rising Stars Events
- Shrewsbury finished 13th overall with a time of 8:13.63. The foursome included Chase Orciuch, Declan Daley, William Jiang, and Niko Manolakos. Natick was 16th overall in 8:18.99.
- Quincy was fourth in the girls’ 4x800m with the squad of Salma Boukhtam, Aluna Coogan-Coyne, Maddie McGillicuddy and Hannah Moriarty combining for a time of 9:39.62. Holliston was tenth with a time of 9:49.74.
