It looks like the offseason training has been spot on for Nathanael Vigo Catala.
The Haverhill senior and defending 300-meter state champion was at the Winter Festival Large School meet on Saturday. In his first meet of the indoor season, Vigo Catala proved untouchable in his specialty, blazing to a winning time of 34.95 seconds. Competing in a separate heat, Medford senior JT Mastrocola was second with a PR and quick 35.97 clocking.
Newton North’s Theo Teszier was lights out in the 600m where he had a five-second best of 1:23.04. Teszier was a comfortable three-plus seconds ahead of Chelmsford’s Nathan Hart, who was timed in 1:26.77 for second.
In the girls’ 600m, Haverhill’s Brenna Corcora and Lowell’s Quinn Petzoid engaged in a tight battle with Corcoran holding off her rival by just a few strides with her winning time of 1:41.37 to Petzoid’s 1:41.75 effort.
Brockton junior Lucas Andrade was a double-winner, leaping a big-time PR of six feet, six inches to capture the high jump and breaking the tape in the 55m hurdles with a best of 7.75. Andrade’s effort in the high jump was four inches higher than his previous best indoor and outdoors.
Coming off a hugely-successful cross-country season, Whitinsville Christian freshman Emily Flagg lapped the field to easily take the two mile with a time of 12:03.72.

In the Small School meet held on Sunday, Greater New Bedford’s Daniel Ward moved to the No. 1 spot in what’s already turning into strong 600m this season with a triumphant 1:22.41. He’s among three that have already broken 1:24, a list that also includes Teszier and St. John’s Prep’s Nick McDonald, who ran 1:23.91 in a Catholic Conference meet on Dec. 5..
Somerville’s Attkos Kaye moved to the top spot in the mile with a PR of 4:35.41. Murdock’s Avery Murphy was first in the girls’ race where she was timed in. 5:23.90. That time ranks No. 2 behind Pentucket’s Kaylie Dalgar, who ran 5:15.43 at the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Dec. 2.
Haley McCormack of Tantasqua, the defending high jump state champion, won her specialty by soaring to a height of 5-4.
