A driving rainstorm that never let up didn’t draw away all the competition at Northfield Mountain on Saturday for the annual Dick Atkinson Invitational.
Sloshing through a wet and muddy course where PRs were not a priority were a dozen schools from throughout the state. The slippery conditions on the challenging 5K terrain did force officials do to a little juggling with the schedule by combining the varsity and JV races.
The Bromfield School swept the team titles. In the girls’ meet, the Trojans breezed to a 46-111 decision over second-place Hamilton-Wenham. North Quincy was third with 124 points. It was a much closer affair in the boys’ competition where Bromfield slipped by runner-up Hamilton-Wenham, 39-49. Triton Regional was third with 121 points.
Promising ninth-grader Ben McWaters of Bromfield captured individual honors for boys. McWaters, led five under 18 minutes with a winning time of 17:32.94. Hamilton Wenham’s James Regan finished at 17:44.28 for second. He was followed by Mohawk Trail ‘s Vincent Gauthier (third, 17:49.26), Hamilton Wenham’s Ben Rich (fourth, 17:52.86) and Hudson’s Andrew Klinedinst (fifth, 17:53.71). McWaters is coming off a career best for the 3.1-mile distance where the talented frosh clocked 17-minutes flat on a flat and lightning-fast course at the Bob Glennon Twilight Invitational
In her first year of cross country, Westfield’s Megan Moran struck gold in the girls’ race with a time of 19:54.07. She was a comfortable 80 meters ahead of Bromfield’s Evelyn Wool, who was timed in 20:09.58. Rounding out the top five was Norfolk County Agricultural’s Madelyn Germain (third, 20:30.60), Murdock’s Avery Murphy (fourth, 20:50.71) and Bromfield’s Rosie Bradley (fifth, 21:18.80).
