Top Events To Watch At Coaches Invitational (Live Results)

Norton High will be a busy place on Saturday as the Lancers play host to the annual MSTCA Coaches Invitational. The statewide competition will feature the standard events customary with the championship meets. It will also include other events such as the Sprint Medley and Distance Medley relays as well as a Freshmen 100-meter dash and mile.

Here we picked out some of the events that we believe could get really interesting at Saturday’s meet.

Boys’ Two Mile

Waltham’s Brendan Wilder produced one of the biggest shockers of this past weekend when he won this event at the Weston Twilight Invitational with a best of 9 minutes, 12 seconds. Could lightning strike again for the senior standout? Wilder will have some competition to push him on Saturday with Oliver Ames’ teammates Ryan Sarney and Brendan Thomas expected to answer the gun. Sarney has a PR of 9:14.88 from the New England Championships this past winter. Thomas has a best of 9:21.

Boys’ 200m

The meet record of 21.50 was set in 1987 by Medford alum Randy King. That record could be in jeopardy this weekend, The top two seeds have both broken 22 seconds with Taunton’s Dmitrius Shearrion (21.84) and Malden’s Johnny Emmanual (21.91) on the line.

Girls’ Shot

The state’s No.1 shot-putter will be inside the circle on Saturday with Catherine Sargent of Dedham holding that distinction. Sargent, who exceeded 40 feet nearly a half a dozen times this past winter, unleashed an outdoor best of 40-11.25 at the Division 5 Relays on April 29. Her overall best of 41-5.5.

Girls Long Jump

Back on May 3, Burlington’s Grace Hanafin became our first long-jumper over 19 feet this year with a leap of 19-3 in a Middlesex League meet. Just a few days ago, Wellesley’s Annie Comella became our second 19-footer, ironically, with an identical distance of 19-3. This could turn into a classic duel on Saturday between these two talented athletes.
