New stars shined bright at the inaugural Northeast Freshmen Sophomore meet!
The Girls 600m lived up to the hype as Julia Ritchey of Dover-Sherborn led three girls into the top ten in the state for the three-lap race. Ritchey set a PR and cracked the 1:40 barrier, running 1:39.49. Her time currently ranks fourth in the state, and 39th in the US. Phoebe Cowles of Old Rochester Regional and Grace Danielson of Milton ran under 1:41 and sit at seventh and eighth in the state.
Both mile races delivered fantastic finishes. The girl’s mile saw Annabelle Schneider of Somerville hold off Inez Smith of Whitinsville Christian, 5:36.02 to 5:37.06. Schneider’s time was a season best. The two hit the bell lap together and battled the final 200m.
The boy’s race saw a trio battle to the line. Newton North’s Lucas Allen emerged as a new star, as he took the win in 4:34.55. That’s the second-best time for a sophomore this season in the Bay State. Cambridge Rindge & Latin freshmen Thomas Dewitt secured second in 4:35.77 over Dover-Sherborn’s William Smith in 4:36.99. Dewitt’s time is the second fastest in the country for a freshmen this season.
The Boys 2 Mile had a similar battle, this time between Whitinsville Christian’s Benjamin Barron, Marshfield’s Connor Rightmire, and Christopher Pan of Dover-Sherbon. Barron and Pan dropped Rightmire heading into the final laps, but the Marshfield Freshmen came on strong in the last 200 to close the gap and eventually take the lead heading into the final turn. But it was Barron who came storming back in the last 50 to take the win in 10:08.70. Rightmire and Pan were on his heels in 10:09.15 and 10:09.54.
In the 55m, Fitchburg’s Jayzelle Florival was victorious in 7.58, a state #39. In the boy’s dash. Bridgewater-Raynham’s Gabriel Ocampo was a decisive victor in 6.71. He’s currently #23 in the state with his PR of 6.66.
In the Girls High Jump, Olivia Scamman of Somerville and Emma Wall of Carver both jumped 5-.00.00, a mark that ties them for 18th in the state. Scamman’s jump was a PR. The boy’s high jump was similar with three jumping 6-00.00. Teague McWeeny of Milton, Kingsley Yang of Gardner, and Jamahl Pasteur of Bridgewater-Raynham all set PRs in the process and now sit tied for 30th in the state.
