Under perfect racing conditions—cool temperatures and no wind—Saturday’s MIAA Meet of Champions delivered exactly as promised.
The state’s final meet of the season featured just about everything at Fort Devens’ Willard Park. In her final preparation for the Brooks Northeast Championships,
Westford Academy’s Abby Hennessey smashed the course record in the Division 1 girls’ race, clocking 17:15.13 on the challenging 5K layout.
Oliver Ames’ Landon Sarney turned in the fastest—and most thrilling—performance of the day. With a devastating kick down the stretch, Sarney edged Natick’s John Bianchi in the final few meters to claim the top prize in 15:33.28, just ahead of Bianchi’s 15:33.54.
Brookline made it four straight Div. 1 boys’ titles, while Lexington came away with the girls’ crown. Both teams added to their season’s momentum heading into next weekend’s Nike Cross Regionals Northeast.
A week after sweeping the Div. 2A titles at Fort Devens, the Boston Public Schools Co-Op team did it again at Willard Park with another impressive sweep. Falmouth’s Silas Gartner made it back-to-back Div. 2 titles with a wire-to-wire victory in 15:43.15. The sister duo of Emily and Abby Flagg of Whitinsville Christian finished 1-2 in the girls’ race—Emily holding off her fast-charging twin in 18:07.20, with Abby crossing in 18:08.51.
Parker Charter’s Nathaniel Henshaw led the Panthers to their third straight Div. 3 team title, winning in 15:43.51. Close behind was Frontier’s Evan Hedlund in 15:47.11. In the girls’ race, Bromfield’s Rosie Bradley surprised the field by taking the individual prize with a triumphant 18:31.29. Greater Lowell Tech secured the school’s first team crown.
