CMAC East Division Championships

Girls Varsity

Whitinsville Christian took the win with 43 points at Ghiloni Park in Marlborough. The 5K at Ghiloni Park presented one of the more challenging courses athletes have seen this season. Emily Flagg of Whitinsville Christian took the win in 20:40. Considering she recently ran 17:37 over Franklin Park, you can understand the difficulty of the course even if she wasn’t running all out. Digging in, it looks like most runners were 90 seconds to Two Minutes slower than their recent PRS.

Sutton was runner up with 54 points and were led by 2-3 finishers Annabella Lamoreaux and Vivien Bregman, with both finishing in 21:25. Lamoreaux had recently cracked 19 minutes at Twilight. Whitinsville’s Inez Smith was their #2 runner and finished in fourth place running 21:37. Hopedale Jr/Sr’s Teagan Richards, just an eighth grader, rounded out the top five and cracked 22 minutes as well, running 21:47. We’ll see many of these teams again in a few weeks split between Northfield Mountain and Willard Field at Fort Devens, for the Division Two and Three Championships.

Boys Varsity

In the boy’s race, Hopedale Jr/Sr narrowly edged Whitinsville Christian, 33-36, for the win. Both teams occupied the top six, and spectators witnessed a great battle for second place and crucial points. Freshmen Quinn Cook got the win in 17:51. He’s coming off a big run at Catholic Memorial where he ran 16:05 over Franklin Park.

The battle for second place came down to Ben Stone of Hopedale and Benjamin Barron of Whitinsville Christian. Stone got the better of the sprint finish, running 18:00 to Barron’s 18:02. Stone’s Hopedale teammate Connor Fitzgibbon was fifth overall in 18:42. Whitinsville Christian teammates Demetri Boermeester and Nathaniel Vos finished in fourth and sixth place.

Douglas teammates, Amer Chaudhary and Trent Fragala, were seventh and eighth and cracked 19 minutes, running 18:49 and 18:53.

South Shore League

Boys Varsity

East Bridgewater Jr/Sr got the win yesterday with an impressive score of 26 points. Their top five all finished in the top ten, with freshmen Jacob Eddy running 17:53 for 10th overall. Up front. Middleboro’s Atley Phinney was first overall in a season record of 15:49. Phinney has had a quiet season so far after finishing 11th at the Meet of Champions last season, but appears to be rounding into form at the right time. Norwell’s John Doherty was second overall in 16:22, a season best.

Girls Varsity

#15 Norwell had an impressive win yesterday take the South Shore League Championship with a score of 18. It came as no surprise that Norwell’s start duo went 1-2. Katherine Murray just missed her PR running 18:06, and Audrey Birtwell stopped the clock at 18:31. Then Norwell teammates Hadley Amon, Olivia Sowinski, and Shelby Maguire finished fifth, sixth, and seventh to secure the win. Norwell is gearing up to defend their Division 3A Championship from last season.

Breaking up Norwell’s top five were Carver Middle/High’s Hazel Butterworth and East Bridgewater Jr/Sr’s Gabrielle Holdsworth. Both athletes are only in middle school. Hazel Butterworth is just a seventh grader and ran 19:18! Holdsworth is an eighth grader at East Bridgewater and ran 19:30. Keep an eye on both of these young talents.
