Interviews, Results & Photos (2K Plus!) From Catholic Memorial Invitational

Twin brothers from Pennsylvania and a repeat winner on the girls’ side ruled the day at Saturday’s Catholic Memorial Invitational.

Mother Nature was everyone’s friend as more than 1,000 runners made their way to Franklin Park, greeted by ideal racing conditions — sunny skies and mid-50-degree temperatures — for the 64th annual event, sponsored by Marathon Sports and New Balance.

On the girls’ side, Whitinsville Christian’s Emily Flagg made it two straight, cruising to a convincing sub-18 performance on the five-kilometer layout. Flagg crossed the line in 17 minutes, 37.5 seconds, more than 10 seconds faster than her winning time from last year. The gifted sophomore is coming off a personal-best 17:17 from last week’s Twilight Invitational.

Lexington, ranked No. 2 in our BSR Power Rankings, showed exactly why it belongs among the elites. The Minutemen had all seven of their varsity runners break 20 minutes and tallied a meet-low 38 points to take the team title.

Over in the boys’ race, it was the visitors from Pennsylvania who stole the spotlight. The team that traveled the farthest produced the two fastest times of the day, with twin brothers Nicolas and Alexander Mazzeo of Lower Merion (PA) finishing 1-2 in the Vincent Catano Red Race with impressive times of 15:10.3 and 15:17.4, respectively.

Pinkerton Academy (NH) claimed the team title with 28 points, while host Catholic Memorial finished a strong third with 94.
