Runners to Watch: Cambridge’s Sophia Juanes Seto

Sophia Juanes Seto returns this season with big shoes to fill for #10 Cambridge Rindge & Latin. Last season she formed the best duo in the state alongside teammate Aoife Shovlin. Together they both finished top ten and led Cambridge to a sixth-place finish at the Meet of Champions. This year, the reins are hers and she’ll look to top her teammate’s fourth place finish last season.

Sophia comes into this season with an 18:23 5K best from the MSTCA Frank Kelly Invitational. Based off her spring season, she is more than capable of lowering that on the right course. She ran 10:49 and 4:57 for the Two- and One-Mile last spring, where she was fifth at the Meet of Champions in the Two. For someone that excels in the longer distances, she has fantastic speed. She clocked a 2:18 800m at the DCL championship and split 2:16 at the Meet of Champions. A sub 18 clocking is in the cards this fall if Cambridge goes after one of the faster courses in the region.

If not, she has proven her strength on more challenging terrain. She has experience on the Meet of Champions course this year at Fort Devens. She ran an impressive 19:06 on Northfield Mountain to finish fourth at the Division 1A race. At Foot Locker, she cracked 19 on Franklin Park to finish 38th at the Regional Meet. The course may look different this year, but if she chooses to race there again, she’s in good position to make a run at a qualifying spot.

Like last year, she’ll form a strong duo, this time with teammate Fiona Litman. Duplicating their sixth-place finish last year will be tough for Cambridge, but with Juanes Seto at the helm, the Falcons are primed for a great season.
