Over the last few years, Boston College High’s Greg McGrath has consistently ranked among the state’s best distance runners. While he’s come close — particularly last year — the one thing that has eluded the Eagles senior is an individual title at the Meet of Champions (MOC).
That could change this fall.
McGrath enters the season as the top returnee from last year’s MOC, where he placed fifth overall in 15 minutes, 44.85 seconds on the five-kilometer course at Fort Devens. He was steady all last fall, capturing the Division 1A crown in 15:50.24 on the demanding trails of Northfield Mountain. At the Catholic Conference Classic, he finished just behind teammate and individual winner Shamus Larnard, clocking a 5K best of 15:16.95 at Wrentham. He also took sixth in the Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan College XC Invitational, covering Van Cortlandt Park’s 2.5-mile course in 12:44.5.
On the track, McGrath proved just as strong. He ran a mile best of 4:19.72 and earned silver medals in the two mile at both the indoor and outdoor MOC, highlighted by his all-time best of 9:06.54 during the winter season.
McGrath is the type of runner who always races hard, no matter the competition. Expect that gritty, competitive style to continue this fall as he takes aim at finally claiming a title at the state’s season-ending meet at Fort Devens.
