Quick Recap Of Twilight Medium, Small School Races

The Bob Glennon Twilight Invitational kicked off on Saturday night with the Medium and Small Schools competing. A pair of underclassmen won the respective girls’ varsity races, including a returning champion. For the boys that made their way to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds for the mega-popular event, we saw two teammates finish 1-2 in their race and a talented miler make his biggest impact on the dirt trails in his race.

With Falmouth’s Silas Gartner on their heels, Marblehead teammates Will Cerruti (845) and Nate Assa (846) lead the way in the Medium School race on Saturday. Cerrutti would go on to take the individual title with the fastest time of day of 15 minutes, 21.04 seconds for the five-kilometer course. Assa made it a took runner-up honors in 15:26.26. Gartner was one of eight harriers that broke 16 minutes in the race, placing third in 15:32.86. Teamwise, Ludlow took the hardware with 106 points. Marblehead was second with 153.

Monument’s Everett Pacheco, a 4:21 miler, proved he has what it takes for the longer distances, too, by scoring a significant win in the Small School race. Pacheco averaged five-minute pace with a time of 15:37.50. He finished about 70 meters ahead of Frontier Regional’s Evan Hedlund, who was timed in 15:47.87 for the silver. Norwell’s John Doherty was third at 15:49.15. As a team, it was Parker Charter with a convincing 62-132 decision over second-place Bromfield.

Whitinsville Christian’s Emily Flagg made it two in a row in the Medium School girls’ race. Flagg beat a strong field with the quickest time of the night, a PR of 17:46.8. The Crusader sophomore was nearly 15 seconds ahead of her closest pursuers, Marblehead’s Marrietta O’Connell (second, 18:00.64). Haley Kavanagh of Oyster River (NH) was third in 18:01.65. Billerica, the state’s No. 1 ranked team in Division 1, upset pre-race favorite Oyster River, a squad currently ranked fourth in the northeast region. Billerica claimed its crown with 73 points. Oyster River finished with 89 points.

Oxford’s Cameron Davis, last year’s Division 3C champion, broke 18 minutes for the first time to capture the Small Division race. The gifted sophomore, broke the tape in 17:53.50. Monument’s Rae Geddes finished second in 18:17.95, while Norwell ninth-grader Katherine Murray was third at 18:26.59. Murray and the Clippers won the team title, beating R.I., entry, Moses Brown, 59-70.
