It was yet another eventful season for our MA track & field athletes. Throughout the summer months, Bay State Running will feature some of our most memorable performances during the outdoor campaign. Here we feature Northbridge’s Marcus Reilly.
Following a mega-successful stint as a runner on the youth circuit, the Rams’ Reilly continued his excellence in the middle and long distance events at the high-school level, one that included national and world age-group records and a host of top performances in his specialties at competitions in-state and throughout the country. Reilly couldn’t have asked for a better send-off as he embarks on his collegiate career in Michigan this fall. During a five-day stretch at the end of his HS career, the Northbridge senior was at his best at two national meets, the Brooks PR Invitational in Seattle and the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia. At the Brooks PR Invite on June 12, Reilly finished second in a loaded mile with a time of 4 minutes, 3.85 seconds. He followed that effort a few days later by clocking an all-time best of 4:01.16 to take third at New Balance and also dipped under 1:50 for the first time in the 800m at 1:49.97, an effort that placed him eighth overall. If all this wasn’t enough, Reilly put the final exclamation point on his career by breaking the national outdoor record for the 1,000m with a time of 2:21.81 at the Montreal Track Classic on June 21.
