It was yet another eventful season for our MA track & field athletes. Throughout the summer months, Bay State Running will feature some of our most memorable performances during the outdoor campaign. Here we feature North Reading’s Giuliana Ligor.
After her victory in the 400-meter hurdles at the Weston Twilight Invitational where the Hornets’ junior clocked a then PR of 1 minute, 1.02 seconds, Ligor indicated to us at BSR that her eventual goal was to dip under the one-minute mark and break the existing state record of 59.52 by Medfield’s Alexandra Stanton in 2011. She figured that would happen during her senior year in 2025.
She was a little off on that prediction.
Under ideal conditions at the Meet of Champions on May 31, Ligor was simply flawless in her specialty. The North Reading standout not only erased Stanton ‘s 13-year-old mark, but raced to a nearly two-second best with a eye-popping 58.97! Her effort was ranked No. 5 in the country. It also put her two seconds ahead of runner-up Nicole Gangi of Woburn, who was timed in an equally impressive 1:01.14. To add to her weekend, Ligor would claim the 400m title two days later with an all-time best of 55.62.
