Bergeron, Reilly Among Elite At Brooks PR Invite

Oregon, Philadelphia, and North Carolina.

Take your pick. MA athletes will be scattered at three different national championship meets this weekend in the official close to the outdoor track & field season. The New Balance Nationals at University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field, the Nike Outdoor Nationals at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field and the adidas Track National at the Marcus T. Johnson Complex in Greensboro, N.C., will all feature some of our top runners, jumpers and throwers at their mid-June competitions.

But before those meets get underway, we can’t forget about what’s happening on Wednesday when some of our nation’s best head to Seattle for the Brooks PR Invitational, a meet that includes two of our state’s hottest distance runners right now – Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron and Northbridge’s Marcus Reilly. Bergeron is two weeks removed from his state-record performance in the two mile at the Meet of Champions where he clocked a nation-leading 8 minutes, 43.66 seconds. The Stanford-bound senior is among an absolutely loaded field that includes nine runners that have gone under 8:45 this year, including top-seed Drew Griffith of Butler (PA), who won the New Balance Nationals this past winter with an indoor national record of 8:34.91. Keep an eye on the clock when Reilly toes the line in the mile. The Michigan commit has a legit chance to break four minutes, something he proved this past Saturday at the Adrian Martinez Classic where he raced to a state and New England record of 3:42.41 for 1,500 meters, a time that computes to 4:00.2 for the full mile. Reilly’s current best for the mile is 4:03.34 from the Battle Roads Track Club Meet #3 on June 1. On the line with be several milers with best in the low four-minute range. The No. 1 seed is sub-4 runner JoJo Jourdan of Olympus (UT), who won the International Mile at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in 3:59.87.
