The quickest of our track & field athletes will take center stage at the Reggie Lewis Center this weekend with the annual MSTCA Speed Classic. The Small Schools will compete on Saturday, while the Large Schools lock horns on Sunday. Both meets, which start at 10 a.m., will also feature the weight throw and long jump.
Glancing through the entries, there’s potential for a multitude of meets records to be broken this weekend.
At the Small School meet, North Reading’s Giuliana Ligor, who set the 600-meter mark of 1:38.81 in 2022, will have her eyes on the 300m record this year. She’s the top seed with a time of 40.55. The current MR is 39.90 by Oakmont alum Alyssa Madden.
The boys’ 600m record of 1:24.90 by Foxboro’s Will Regan could also get erased on Saturday. The top two seeds have both run faster with Ayer Shirley’s Cole New (1:22.90) and Brpmfield’s Jack Stahl (1:24.01) expected to toe the line.
The girls’ 55m dash record of 7.46 certainly seems well within reach of top seed, Eliana Barnet. The David Prouty senior comes in with an all-time best of 7.24.
In the Large School meet, there are at least four MR that we feel could go down at Reggie.
Lowell’s Quinn Petzold is the top seed in the 300m with a 41.90 best. That time is right around the record of 41.30 by former Brookline standout Sonjja Nagle.
Annie Comella of Wellesley set the current meet record of 7.37 for the 55m dash. The Red Raider junior will once again answer the gun in the short dash where she owns a PR of 7.33, so there’s a chance we could say bye, bye to that mark, too.
We could see both the boys’ and girls’ 4x200m record disappear on Sunday. The current mark for boys in 1:33.12 by Wellesley. In a race that could be very close coming down the stretch, the top three seeds, Brockton (1:33.0), Natick (1:33.50) and Cambridge Rindge & Latin (1:33.52), are all within range. The Wellesley girls will be chasing the mark of 1:49.59 by Hopkinton. The Red Raiders come into the meet with a seed of 1:47.50.
