The final competition before Saturday’s MIAA Division State Championship featured a few runners that we expect to prosper this weekend. Among them, our latest recipients of the HOKA Athletes of the Week. Congratulations to Holliston’s Carmen Luisi and Northbridge’s Marcus Reilly for this week’s honor.
Competing at this past weekend’s Frank Mooney Coaches Invitational, Luisi proved she’s ready to earn the three-peat in Division 2 at the divisional states and the following week at the Meet of Champions. At Wrentham’s 5K layout, Luisi held off teammate Maggie Kuchman and Whitinsville Christian’s Emily Flagg down the final stretch to capture the individual title in the Small School varsity race with a time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds. The Syracuse-bound harrier was just a second ahead of Kuchman and two ticks faster than Flagg.
In the boys’ Small School race, it was all Reilly. The Northbridge star, who is prepping for success the next two weekends, breezed through an opening mile of 4:49 and was all alone at the finish where he posted a winning time of 15:42.8. The Michigan-bound senior was 18 seconds in front of runner-up Grayson Duane of Groton Dunstable.
