Bragging rights were among the motivators for the league and conference championships over the last few weeks with teams and athletes continuing to prepare and get those final tune-ups for the upcoming divisional state championship and Meet of Champions.
At the Wrentham Developmental Center, several meets took place on Saturday, including the Bay State Conference Championships. It was from this meet, which always attracts a plethora of talent, that we picked our latest HOKA Athletes of the Week. Congratulations to our female and male recipients for this week’s honor, Needham’s Greta Hammer and Newton North’s Gabriel Grove.
Hammers continues to prove that she’s one of the leading contenders to strike it rich in Division 1 next month with an impressive victory against some top competition at the BSC meet. In a preview to their matchup at the Div. 1A Championships on Nov. 11, the Needham star defeated Weymouth’s Gracie Richard and Wellesley’s Lucia Werner, crossing the line with strong time of 18 minutes, 16.8 seconds. She finished 100m ahead of Richard, who took second at 18:39.8, while Werner grabbed third at 18:55.4.
The Tigers’ Grove was at his best in the boys’ race where he took control by the midway point and never reliquished his lead from there en route to a winning time and PR of 15:47.8. He was comfortably ahead of runner-up Stephen Goehringer of Wellesley, who was timed in 15:58.
