The stars were shining brightly this past weekend with the MIAA Division State Championships. In the last competition before this Saturday’s Meet of Champions, we saw several of our top MA track & field athletes perform at their best.
For a weekly honor that is deserving of so many, we’re awarding the male recipient of our HOKA Athlete of the Week to Malden’s Johnny Emmanuel. The speedy senior became only our state’s second runner to ever break 47 seconds in the 400-meter run at the Div. 1 Championships. Emmanuel led an incredible eight runners under 50 seconds with a winning time of 46.99. Two days earlier, the Malden standout came a lean away from another gold medal, finishing just one hundredth of a second behind Acton Boxborough’s Alex Landry in the 200m dash where he was second overall with a PR of 21.69. Right behind Emmanuel for this week’s AofW is Westford Academy’s Paul Bergeron, who came a mere second from a state record in the two mile with his impressive victory at D1 where he was timed in 8:51.88.
